What to expect in therapy:
Individual therapy is similar to having a personal trainer or going to physiotherapy for your physical health, but instead you meet with me (a Registered Psychologist) for your psychological and emotional wellbeing. These one-on-one sessions provide an opportunity for us to explore how you perceive the world and work through challenges that arise in life.
Individual therapy offers an opportunity for a space that is safe and confidential. Together we will explore developing strategies that are uniquely tailored to your needs, empower you to develop a stronger understanding of yourself, and navigate challenging emotions during difficult experiences.
1.
We will start with a free phone conversation so that we can get to know each other. It’s an opportunity for us to connect, clarify any questions you may have, and for you to see if I am the right therapist for you. If it feels like we are a good fit for working together, we will schedule either an in-person or virtual appointment.
2.
We will start our first session exactly where you are at. Our first few sessions will involve a bit of information gathering, as we talk about what has been happening in your life and how it has been impacting you. This will help me understand you within the context of your world. Our sessions will always move at your pace, and it is never required that you share all of your story. We will work together to explore your goals and develop a plan to address these goals.
3.
Throughout sessions, I will typically provide you with some insight and possible treatment options. This part of the process is very collaborative, and it is important that you feel comfortable with how your goals are approached. I will explain your options, answer questions, and develop a treatment plan for sessions. I want you to leave with a greater understanding of what is going on for you, how I can help, and what that process will look like.
4.
The number of sessions will differ depending on your goals and needs for therapy. Often, I initially meet with clients weekly as we are developing and beginning to address the goals of therapy. As treatment continues, clients will often transition to biweekly and then once a month. Of course, you know yourself best. If you would like to decrease or increase the frequency of sessions, I am here to support!
